Kotka – a City of Parks
Kotka is not called the city of parks for no reason! The city boasts a number of prized parks which provide pleasure to the eye and joy to the soul. Sapokka – Finland’s top award-winning park. This water park which faces a boot-shaped bay contains a delightful variety of vegetation as well as a small display of stones on the upper level of the garden's waterfall. As the sun sets in the evenings, the park is lit up with impressive artificial lights. Sculpture Park: over the past ten years, a number of sculptures have been unveiled in the Linden Boulevard flanking the Keskuskatu high street. The Herb Garden: this garden brimming with herbs and medicinal plants has been established in a small, renovated 18th century fortress. The design of the place caters for visually impaired people, in particular. Sibelius Park: a meeting place in the city centre with the statue of an eagle (“Kotka” in Finnish) towering over the round fountain pool. Other central parks include Isopuisto, Fuksinpuisto, Palotorninvuori and Katariinanniemi. Kumparepuisto is another notable park in nearby Karhula.
