National Park Repovesi
Navigate yourself to the nature and take time out of your hectic life for total relaxation. The versatile and magnificent nature destinations in Kouvola region gives you a great opportunity for this, for example in the Repovesi National Park. Repovesi National Park and Aarnikotka Forest Nature Reserve connected to it, is a rugged backwood dotted by tens of lakes. The Repovesi National Park was founded on January 1, 2003, to protect the largest vast and uninhabited forest, mire and lake area in Southeast Finland. The peaceful surroundings allow visitors to indulge in their favorite hobbies, from picking berries to walking in snow-shoes, or learn about the area’s geology or the history of log floating. Some sights of the area are many high spots, such as Olhavanvuori Rock and Mustalamminvuori Hill, the hanging bridge over Lapinsalmi Sound and log floating structures in Kuutinlahti Bay. The quiet of the hills may occasionally be disturbed by the wailing gabble of the red-throatead diver as it crosses the lake on its way to its neesting pond. In winter visitors may see tracks left by a lynx, a pine marten, a moose or an otter or snow forms left behind by tetraonids. The Siberian flying squirrel and owls thrive in the shade of old-growth forests. The area of Repovesi National Park consists of nature fragmented by rocks, lakes, ponds, brooks and little boogs, of which a part has been preserved untouched. Over half of Repovesi’s trees are pines. In these pine-dominated heaths lingonberries, blueberries, lichens and moss thrive. Between high cliffs there are lush grove-like forests. In these areas the littleleaf linden, which is a rarity, can be found. On summer nights the wonderful smell of the lesser butterfly-orchid wafts over the herb-rich forests. Repovesi is a traditional and popular hiking destination. There are several, marked hiking trails of varying difficulty. Repovesi is also a water destination and the rugged cliffs of the National Park can be viewed from the lakes. There are excellent opportunities for canoeing and rowing, and several local water buses and lake cruise boats and taxi boats traffic in the area. The hanging bridge over Lapinsalmi Sound has to be experienced!
